Kuneticka Hora

Description

Kuneticka Hora Castle, one of the youngest structures of its kind in this country, dominates the flat Polabí Region. It is perched on a mountain of the same name (294 metres above sea level) that is a distinct feature of the Pardubice Region in its own right.

The hill consists of magma that once solidified under the surface of the earth and was subsequently revealed - gneiss was more resistant than the surrounding sandstone sediments. At the end of the 15th century and in the early 16th century, a unique system of walls, built by the Pernstejns, surrounded the structure.

After the Thirty Years' War the castle became dilapidated. Apart from this a stone quarry situated below the castle posed a threat to the structure. Kuneticka Hora acquired its current neo-Gothic appearance during restoration carried out according to a design by the famous architect D. Jurkovic.

Inside you can find expositions dedicated to hunting and old postcards depicting the castle. There are also exhibits documenting the history of crimeand punishment in the Czech Lands. The Chapel of St Catherine has preserved a valuable honeycomb vault. During the spring and summer months a range of events, including The Archers' Day and Kuneticka Hora for Children, are staged at the castle.
