About new town district in prague
The New Town, founded in 1348 by Charles IV, was carefully planned and laid out
around three large central market-places: the Hay Market
(Senovazne Square), the Cattle Market (Charless Square)
and the Horse Market (Wenceslas Square).
Twice as large as the Old Town, the area was mainly inhabited by
tradesmen and craftsmen such as bkacksmiths, wheelwriths and brewers.
During the late 19th century, much of the New Town was demolished
and completely redeveloped, giving it the appearance it has today.
The 750 meter long and 60 meter wide boulevard originates from the
Charles IV period when it was used as a Horse market.
In the upper part of the boulevard the statue of St. Wenceslas on his
horse can be seen. It is the good king Vaclav, who was murdered by
his brother over a thousand years ago, and who over the years has
become the national hero. The artist J.V. Myslbek began to make
this statue in the year 1884 and 36 years later it was finished
Nationale Theatre
A Neo-Rennaisance building of 1868-81, built to plans of J. Zitek. A
fire destroyed much
of the building in its first year of existence; it was reconstructed
by architect Josef Schulz in 1883. The outside and inside decoration
was completed by the artists of the National Theatre generation.
M. Ales, F. Zenisek, V. Hynais, J. V. Myslbek, etc. The
National Theatre is the
outstanding Czech stage and its repertoire consists of drama, opera
and ballet performances.
Jindrizska Tower
The building conversion in the historical tower according to the design
of the architect Vrzal and its commercial use was completely in conformance
with the requirements for the protection of monuments. The ferroconcrete,
self-supporting construction does not in any way impinge on the stone
masonry of the original bell tower.
It is quite simply unique and the only tower in Central Europe that has
been opened up to the public for multipurpose use. It is furnished and
fitted out to a standard appropriate for visitors in the third millennium
(air-conditioning, modern lighting, staircase and express elevator, etc.)
All of the café, restaurant and retail spaces in the tower have managed
to preserve the characteristic values of the building and locality.
There is a magnificent panoramic view of Prague from
the tenth floor, which has remained unknown up to now. The tower is in the
epicentre of all of Prague's renowned "one hundred spires", of which
there are actually more than a thousand in total. For this reason there is
also a museum of Prague spires on the sixth floor.
New Town Hall
A gothic complex of buildings from the late 14th and early 15th centuries,
rebuilt in the renaissance style in the 16th century. It contains a tower
with Our Lady Chapel, two gothic halls with ribbed vaults and a renaissance
hall. During 1377 - 1784 the seat of the New Town authorities. On 30th
July, 1419, the scene of the defenestration of the Catholic aldermen by
Prague Hussites which mardked the begining of the Hussite revolution.
