01st January 2010, CZECH PEACE in Prague Cinemas

CZECH PEACE "I love it! " - Michael Moore
(Ceský mir)
Director: V. Klusák - F. Remunda, CZ, 2010, Czech version with english subtitles, 103 min

Documentary comedy about the Czechs who – considering their experience with the Soviet occupation as well as the current US-led War on Terror – are trying to decide whether to host a foreign army. Do we belong with the West or rather with the East?

Could we cope in an altogether different arrangement? The film captures the country once again involved with political slogans – “With the Soviet Union for all eternity” and, on the other hand, the US “You’re either with us or against us.”
A parallel portrait of two men, two generals in the highly publicized war over the US radar base – a government lobbyist and an obstinate local mayor.

Recently the divisive American documentary maker Michael Moore has been fulsome in his praise of Klusák and Remunda. He told National Public Radio that Czech Dream their previews successful documentary comedy was among his 6 favorite films ever.
And he now says he also loves Czech Peace and wants to show it at his own Traverse Film Festival.

30st May 2009, Late Czechoslovak president Benes's villa opens to public

Sezimovo Usti - The villa of the late Czechoslovak president Edvard Benes, co-founder of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918, was oepned to the punlic after reconstruction for the first time today, exactly 125 years since his birth. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Jan Fischer. Benes (1884-1948) was second Czechoslovak president from 1935, when he succeeded Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, until his resignation in October 1938, shortly after he signed the Munich agreement that dismembered the country. He was also president in 1945-48, and held the post in the exile Czechoslovak government in London in 1940-1945. It was a wish of Benes's wife, Hana, who died in 1974, that the villa serve the public. The three-year reconstruction restored the villa after the original design by architect Petr Kropacek from the 1930s. The insensitive adjustments that communist politicians had done to the villa have been removed. The reconstruction cost almost 20 million crowns. Before the reconstruction only Benes's study and the sleeping room in which he died was opened to the public on national holidays and the Benes's anniversary days. The villa, declared a national heritage sight in 2000, will be opened to the public every last weekend in the month from May until October. It will no longer be used for recreation of civil servants like under the previous regime, but there are rooms for government visits and a room reserved for the prime minister on the second floor.

Czech Crown

For only 11 days, the most important symbols of Czechs, the Czech Crown Jewels, will be shown to the public at the Prague Castle's Old Royal Palace in Vladislav Hall. The Jewels are the symbols of the Czech state and the secular power of its rulers and include: St. Wenceslas Crown of Charles the IV with its case and cushion, the orb with its case, the coronation mantle, an ermine stole, and belt.

Czech Crown Jewels are important part of the national cultural heritage. They are kept in the Crown Chamber in the St Vitus Cathedral right after the Prague Castle. This is one of the most carefully guarded places in Prague. For example, seven keys are necessary to open the chamber's door. Each key is kept by a different person. Czech President, the Prime Minister or the Prague Archbishop are among them.

If you decide to see these important Jewels, you have to be patient. Long hour queues are waiting to see them just for a while, the chance to see them is really rare, once in some five or ten years. The jewels are shown only occasionally, this year they will be shown in connection with re-election of Czech President Vaclav Klaus. Open daily from 9am to 5pm.

01st December 2005, Mozart Prague 2006

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Prague

Mozart had a special relationship with Prague and the people of Prague. The audience here celebrated their Figaro with the much deserved reverence he was missing in his hometown Vienna. His quote "My Czechs understand" me became very famous in the Czech lands. Many tourists follow the tracks of this great composer in Prague and visit the Mozart Museum of the Villa Bertramka where they have the opportunity to enjoy a chamber concert. In Prague, Don Giovanni was premiered on October 29, 1787 at the National Theater. In the later years of his life Prague provided Mozart many financial resources from commissions !

In 2006 the whole cultural world will remember 250 years from the birth of W. A. Mozart whose life and work are essentially connected, among other places, to Prague. The exceptional position of Prague in the life of W. A. Mozart is proved by his saying "My orchestra is in Prague".
