"I love it! " - Michael Moore (Ceský mir) Director: V. Klusák - F. Remunda, CZ, 2010, Czech version with english subtitles, 103 min Documentary comedy about the Czechs who – considering their experience with the Soviet occupation as well as the current US-led War on Terror – are trying to decide whether to host a foreign army. Do we belong with the West or rather with the East? Could we cope in an altogether different arrangement? The film captures the country once again involved with political slogans – “With the Soviet Union for all eternity” and, on the other hand, the US “You’re either with us or against us.” A parallel portrait of two men, two generals in the highly publicized war over the US radar base – a government lobbyist and an obstinate local mayor. Recently the divisive American documentary maker Michael Moore has been fulsome in his praise of Klusák and Remunda. He told National Public Radio that Czech Dream their previews successful documentary comedy was among his 6 favorite films ever. And he now says he also loves Czech Peace and wants to show it at his own Traverse Film Festival. 30st May 2009, Late Czechoslovak president Benes's villa opens to public Sezimovo Usti - The villa of the late Czechoslovak president Edvard Benes, co-founder of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918, was oepned to the punlic after reconstruction for the first time today, exactly 125 years since his birth.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Jan Fischer.
Benes (1884-1948) was second Czechoslovak president from 1935, when he succeeded Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, until his resignation in October 1938, shortly after he signed the Munich agreement that dismembered the country.
He was also president in 1945-48, and held the post in the exile Czechoslovak government in London in 1940-1945.
It was a wish of Benes's wife, Hana, who died in 1974, that the villa serve the public.
The three-year reconstruction restored the villa after the original design by architect Petr Kropacek from the 1930s. The insensitive adjustments that communist politicians had done to the villa have been removed.
The reconstruction cost almost 20 million crowns.
Before the reconstruction only Benes's study and the sleeping room in which he died was opened to the public on national holidays and the Benes's anniversary days.
The villa, declared a national heritage sight in 2000, will be opened to the public every last weekend in the month from May until October.
It will no longer be used for recreation of civil servants like under the previous regime, but there are rooms for government visits and a room reserved for the prime minister on the second floor.28st May 2009, Egg throwers wage war on Czech opposition leader The Czech Republic is turning into a messy battleground with a series of egg-throwing attacks on an opposition leader amid the campaign for the European Parliament elections to be held next week.
Hundreds of eggs flew at Social Democrat chairman Jiri Paroubek and his entourage at a pre-election meeting in Prague on Wednesday.
"We won't let this discourage us. Shame on you," said Paroubek, with yolk dripping off his chin and belly.
Paroubek, 56, fell out of favour in particular with young Czechs when, as the country's prime minister, he backed the police for breaking up a youths' techno party in 2005.
The Social Democrats, whose no-confidence vote toppled Mirek Topolanek's cabinet midway through the Czech EU presidency in late March, lead in opinion polls together with Topolanek's Civic Democrats, each receiving about 28 percent support.
The egg wars broke out two weeks ago when two men in a town near Prague threw tomatoes and eggs at Paroubek, starting a series of attacks.
Last week, a man in another town put a boxful of eggs on the stage in front of Paroubek, saying: "Here you are, at least we won't have to throw them."
The furious politician kicked the box off the stage, hitting a few of his supporters, according to the denik.cz news site.
Otakar Fleischmann, a psychologist, told the DNES daily on Wednesday that "Paroubek's angry reaction to the attacks provokes further attacks, because the attackers find his behaviour amusing."
On the same day, DNES ran three pages on the egg wars, including a study on the trajectory of a flying egg and the composition of an egg, and a did-you-know column on eggs.
During Wednesday's attack, the politicians merely stood and watched as the eggs hit them, with no help in sight as the government had declined their request for increased police protection.
Meanwhile, the egg war hit cyberspace as a young man established a group called "An egg for Paroubek in every town" on Facebook, attracting more than 42,400 members to date.05th April 2009, Barack Obama in PragueMr Barack Obama visiting Prague between 4th and 5th April.
