For only 11 days, the most important symbols of Czechs, the Czech Crown Jewels, will be shown to the public at the Prague Castle's Old Royal Palace in Vladislav Hall. The Jewels are the symbols of the Czech state and the secular power of its rulers and include: St. Wenceslas Crown of Charles the IV with its case and cushion, the orb with its case, the coronation mantle, an ermine stole, and belt.

Czech Crown Jewels are important part of the national cultural heritage. They are kept in the Crown Chamber in the St Vitus Cathedral right after the Prague Castle. This is one of the most carefully guarded places in Prague. For example, seven keys are necessary to open the chamber's door. Each key is kept by a different person. Czech President, the Prime Minister or the Prague Archbishop are among them.

If you decide to see these important Jewels, you have to be patient. Long hour queues are waiting to see them just for a while, the chance to see them is really rare, once in some five or ten years. The jewels are shown only occasionally, this year they will be shown in connection with re-election of Czech President Vaclav Klaus. Open daily from 9am to 5pm.

01th April 2008, Prague: 12th most popular world city with tourists, attractive for celebrities

Prague is the 12th most popular city in the world. The ranking comes from the poll by tourists voting through the TripAdvisor portal. Almost 85,000 said they liked Prague the best. No other Czech city or town made it into the top 100 chart.

Prague, being atrractive for crowds of tourists, is also visited by top world celebrities. This Sunday, heiress of the Hilton empire Paris Hilton came spend a day with his current boyfriend Benji Madden, the guitarist and backup vocalist of the band Good Charlotte.

Hilton visited his band's concert, but also walked across the Prague city centre including Old Town Square.

Prague recently succeeded also in annual survey Traveler's choice of the same portal which focuses on the most luxury hotels in the world. Prague's Le Palais ranked fifth, and four other Prague hotels also were in the top 100 chart.

Prague is among the top five cities in Europe. Last year, the Czech capital was visisted by more than 4 million foreign tourists.

21st March 2008, Prague full of "half runners" on Saturday 29 March 2008

All long-distance runners from all over the world head to Prague for the last March weekend. On Saturday 29 March 2008 at 12:00, the 10th year of Hervis Prague Half Marathon will start from the street 17. listopadu (where nice Rudolfinum building is located).

Runners will enjoy perfect views of Prague Castle, Vyąehrad Castle and other Prague fascinating monuments. The course of more than 21 kilometres long run leads in the historical Old Town and on both Vltava river banks.

Will one of the runners attack last year's events record by Kenyan Patrick M. Ivuti who made for 1h 01 min Last year almost 4500 participants started the race, be one of them now! Saturday programme also includes Corporate Half Marathon (Relay) designed to stir up a little friendly competition between companies.

A team is composed from four runners, three of them run 5 km each and the last one runs 6,097 km to make it half marathon. And after this "warm-up round" you can come back for full Prague marathon, that is scheduled for 11 May 2008.

18st March 2008, Retrospective of Czech painter Mikolas Ales

The retrospective work of Mikolas Ales, one of the most important Czech painters from turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is now on display at Imperial Stables at the Prague Castle.

Ales is mostly known as one of the painters that redecorated the famous foyer of the Prague National Theatre. He also made frescos and sgrafiti in many Prague facades, including the house of Mr Rott, now Hotel Rott. Mikolas Ales did gain fame during his lifetime, especially for his architectural artwork but his painting s were praised after his death.

The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 6pm. Until 20 April.

18st March 2008, Prague Spring 2008 starts on 12 May

In just 2 month, the 63rd year of International Music Festival Prague Spring starts traditionally with Bedrich Smetana's My Country.

Each year, on 12 May (the day of this Czech composer death in 1884), this performance starts three weeks of excellent classic music. This season's My Country will be performed by Brno Philharmonic Orchestra and its present music director, Petr Altrichter.

During the festival you can listen to Mácal?s Schönberg one-act operatic monodrama Erwartung (Expectation) with soloist Dagmar Pecková.

After a five-year break, the popular cycle Prague Organ Days is returning to the Prague Spring programme. If you like organ sound come to Prague churches on the weekend of 24 and 25 May.

26th November 2007, Czech football team defeats Cyprus 2 x 0 and passes to Euro from first place

The Czech Republic sealed top spot in Euro 2008 Group D qualifying with a comfortable 2 x 0 victory in Cyprus. The goals were scored by Daniel Pudil and Jan Koller.

Czech football team finished on the top of Group D with 29 points because of their better head-to-head record against also-qualified Germany. Euro 2008 will take place in Austria and Switzerland from 7 to 29 June 2008.

26th November 2007, Christmas markets on Prague's Old Town Square start on 1 December

A 20-metres tall Christmas tree from Krkonose mountains will make a centre point of the Old Town Square Christmas markets. The tree is going to be cut off this Saturday 24 November and then it makes it way to Prague city centre where it will be lit on 1 December after dark.

Old Town Square markets are traditionally connected with the Christmas traditions in Prague; they are open every day and you can buy Czech glass, wooden toys or hand-made jewellery and Christmas tree ornaments as well as hot food and warm drinks in the wooden stalls just on the Square.

09th July 2007, Charles Bridge celebrating 650 years.

The most famous monument in Prague - The Charles Bridge is celebrating its jubilee in 2 days 8th and 9th July. In the year 1357 9th Juy at 5:31 am Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV laid The foundation stone of the Bridge.
Until 19th century it (500 years) it was the only bridge in Prague. Charles Bridge connecting Prague's Old Town and Mala Strana (Lesser Town) since its completion in 1402.

04th June 2007, George W. Bush in Prague

American president George W. Bush will fly in Prague on late on Monday 4 June. He will be visiting the city also on Tuesday. The visit will take place within his trip to the G8 summit to be held in Germany on 6 to 8 June 2007. Bushs security will be also provided by the secret services and the military.

Bushs security will be also provided by the secret services and the military. According to Czech press, some 1500 policemen will be deployed during next weeks visit. The Prague international airport in Ruzyne will interrupt operation for about half an hour over.

Prague citizens and visitor have also prepare for closing due to the Bushs visit. For example Prague Castle will be partly closed or the street on which the car of American president will go will not be allowed for general transport, including Evropska, the main avenue leading to Prague Airport. Bush will probably stay in American residence in Prague Bubenec.

12nd May 2007, Prague Marathon

This weekend, Prague will be full of runners again. On Saturday 12 May, some shorter accompanying race such as 4 kilometers family runs takes place. The weekend culminates with full-length race, Volkswagen Marathon Prague. It starts from the Old Town Sqaure at 9am on Sunday. Don't be afraid. There is 6 hours time limit to make the 42.195 meters long run. The event starts with Prague Marathon Expo fair, that is opened on Prague Exhibition Grounds from Thursday to Saturday. Take your running shoes on your trip to Prague and see you there!

09th May 2007, Prague Metro

It's 33 years from the day when first passengers in Prague metro heard favourite "Ukoncete vystup a nastup, dvere se zaviraji" (Finish you getting off and on, the doors are closing). Right on 9 May 1974, first Prague metro line started its service. It mostly helped the people living in southern Prague to quicken their trip to Prague city center. Prague underground quickly expands. Whole system now has more than fifty stations on three lines and new stations are being added in the short period of time.

Unusal and quite original name characterizes the exhibition of the "young rebel" in Gallery Art Prague on the Wenceslas Sqaure. Have you ever heard something like The 116th anniversary of the first intromition of frankfurter into roll?

Czech artist - now living in Berlin - Ludek Pesek Pachl is mostly inspired by Pop Art culture, most of his painting looks like posters. Pachl is also inspired by the punk culture.

08th October 2006, 10th annual Forum 2000 Conference in Prague

The 10th annual Forum 2000 Conference is going to be held in Prague on October 8-10, 2006. Last year, a series was launched, dedicated to the nature and meaning of the current conflicts preventing peaceful coexistence of the international community. This year's conference will continue as part of that series.

The conference will take place over three days. The opening ceremony will take place on the evening of October 8 at Prague Crossroads, the former St Anne's church in the Prague's Old Town. The working program of the conference will begin on the following day and will have the format of a plenary session divided into three panels. This part of the conference will take place at Zofin Palace.

International film festival focusing on environment, natural and cultural heritage...

The oldest European film festival on the environment was founded in 1974 as a contribution to the World Environmental Day declared by UN. The first of twenty two annual staging of the festival were held in the town Ostrava not only as an international film competition and a source of environmental knowledge through audio visual productions. The staging held prior to the November 1989 events were recognise as annual meeting of environmental experts and the broader public and the only discussion platform for environmental problems.

04th September 2006, 16th Prague Autumn International Music Festival

Prague Autumn enters into its 16th edition and has become a permanent part of Prague, but also European musical life. It has thousands of friends home as well as abroad. During the last 15 years, at the concerts of Prague Autumn have performed 79 orchestras, 110 conductors, 131 singers, 61 pianists, 35 violin players, 25 cellists, 18 choirs, 6 chamber ensembles, and 26 other instrumentalists. The number of attendees approaches 270 000, not speaking about millions of radio listeners all around the world and domestic TV watchers. In the last year, the attendance of the festival reached 87%, whilst some of the concerts were sold out three months beforehand.

25th August 2006, Pluto is no longer a planet

The International Astronomical Union decided on 24.08.2006 in Prague to demote Pluto - the solar system now has oficially 8 planets.

Pluto has three moons. Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. Some astronomers call Pluto and Charon a double planet because they are so close in size. In 2005, astronomers observed two more moons of Pluto. The moons were named Nix and Hydra.

15th August 2006, New tiger in Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo is the new proud owner of 13 years old siberian tiger Mauglis (Panthera tigris altaica) who is designed partner for female tiger Marlylei which was brought to Prague last year from Calgary, Canada. This new pair has a good perspective of tiger breed hopefuly in next six monthes.

The transportation of tiger who was brought up in Pilsen Zoo was without any major problems. The tiger was just slightly troubled by the transportation so the escort made few breaks to calm him down.

Now the tiger will be 14 to 21 days in compulsory quarantine - the visitors can be looking forward to see him in about two weeks.

Mauglis is in good shape and condition. Current weight is about 250 kg.

You have a unique oportunity to visit the Prague city's sewer system during its 100 years anniversary. Prague has working sewer system since 1906 and has 3,5 thousands tunnels and offers a great atmosphere and an unusual experience.

Saturday night (June 17th) it was Third Prague Museum Night. Little over 135. 000 visitors came on Saturday to one of the 43 museums or gallery in Prague. The museums were open from 7 pm till 1 am during Saturday night.

In Prague's Franciscan monastery you can see now the best work of the PHOTOGRAPHIC PRAGUE - the 10th year of the competition promoting the legacy of great Czech photographer Josef Saudek, who loved photographing his city and made it famous.

The competition and the follow-up exhibition have been organized every year since 1996. The aim of the event is to stimulate as many observers of the capital of Prague as possible to turn their photographic eyes on the city and then to collect the best pictures of Prague taken by both photographers and its citizens and visitors.

10th May 2006, Color of Balkan Brass in Prague

Color of Balkan Brass is 2 day festival of balkan brass music held in Roxy Club in Prague. It offers great oportunity to listen to the best of rythms of Balkan, Gipsy music and oriental melodies. On May 9 it presents Va Fan Fahre band (Belgium) which mixes balkan music with kletzmer, jazz, funk and ska. And the main star of the evening serbian-french group Slonovski Bal famous for its energic and powerful music. You can dance on different styles of music including. sa-sa, czoczek, oro or devils round.

The main star of the festival is Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar (Serbia) - considered as the best and most famous serbian brass band.

The founder Boban Markovic is considered as probably the best living serbian trumpet player. The band offers great mix of different types of balkan music and influences. The concert is held on May 10 along with Gypsy.Cz - with its so called roma hip hop - mixture of hip hop and gipsy music (acordeon, guitar, violin).

Both days also offer djs Dj Shatel (De) and Balkanbeats Berlin (DE) whith mixture of balkan and gipsy music with different styles.

The biggest sport event at the Czech Republic, first time the european teams will introduce their craft and practice.

Euroleague Basketball is mostly compared to NBA due popularity, which is the most important in the european range. Final part of the contest is named as Final Four and there will be four best teams qualified from 24 original participants.

26th January 2006, Days of European Film 2006

The 13th Days of European Film festival takes over the Aero and Světozor movie theatres, January 26th through February 5th, showcasing the continent's best contemporary cinema.

This year's event features 40 feature films and 13 shorts, produced or co-produced in 30 different countries. Nearly all films will be shown in their original languages, with simultaneous Czech translation, and most will be subtitled in English. A Svetozor screening of Joe Wright's Golden Globe-nominated Pride and Prejudice opens the festival, Friday 26th, at 8pm.

Prior to moving to Brno, the Prague section of the festival closes Sunday 5th, with a screening of the Michael Haneke film Cache (Hidden), also at Svetozor. DEF's traditional Marathon of European Film events also return - there'll be all-night screenings at Světozor, on Friday 27th, and one at Aero on Friday 3rd.

02nd January 2006, New Year's Eve 2006 in Prague

New Year's Eve is a real party night in Prague. Crazy is the only way to describe the Old Town Square at midnight, and as for the stupendous firework display! Well!

Depeche Mode is just one of the many bands that popularized synthesizers and keyboards, but it is probably the most popular and successful one as we speak. Ironically, the band started out as a rock group, consisting of Basildon, Essex, natives Andy Fletcher (b. July 8, 1960), Vince Clarke (b. July 3, 1961) and Martin Gore (b. July 23, 1961). Composition of Sound, as they named themselves, soon decided to go from guitar rock to synthesizer and electronica, the popular sound of the '80s.

The Tradition Saint Nichola (in Czech Mikulas)

The old folk tradition on the day of Saint Nicholas is still alive. The custom of giving children Saint Nicholas gifts (behind a window, in a chimney, inside a shoe or stocking, etc.) was clearly inspired by the legend of the three daughters with an indebted father.

The Mikulas DAY in Czech republic is Dec 5th it is the evening when every child is excited and afraid in the same time. Excited awaiting presents and sweets and afraid from the Devil.

Around the city walking masked processions of Saint Nicholas, Devil and Angel and stopped at each house.

They asking if the kids were good during the year, if yes the have to say poem and then they get the gifts but if not, if they were not good, the devil takes them down to the hell...

05th December 2005, To the Celetna street returned Gaslights

The historical centre is illuminant by new laps. The electric lightening were replaced by romantic gaslights. Now in testing functioning shining 90 lamps. The costs was around 16 millions CZK.

The magic of Gaslights returned to Prague 3 years ago when were instaled 9 lamps in Michalska street in Prague 1.

Now you can find them also in Vejvodova street, Melantrichova, and Uhelny Trh street. Next year the town planing to use Gaslights in Hradcanske namesti (square at the Prague Castle) and later to all the way of Kings road (Kralovska Cesta)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Prague

Mozart had a special relationship with Prague and the people of Prague. The audience here celebrated their Figaro with the much deserved reverence he was missing in his hometown Vienna. His quote "My Czechs understand" me became very famous in the Czech lands. Many tourists follow the tracks of this great composer in Prague and visit the Mozart Museum of the Villa Bertramka where they have the opportunity to enjoy a chamber concert. In Prague, Don Giovanni was premiered on October 29, 1787 at the National Theater. In the later years of his life Prague provided Mozart many financial resources from commissions !

In 2006 the whole cultural world will remember 250 years from the birth of W. A. Mozart whose life and work are essentially connected, among other places, to Prague. The exceptional position of Prague in the life of W. A. Mozart is proved by his saying "My orchestra is in Prague".
